Looking back on her nine years of dementia caregiving, Donna Larkin realizes now that her education strongly informed her approach. During those years, she was determined to find options for overcoming every Alzheimer's challenge that came her husband’s way. Enduring is a chronicle of her husband's Alzheimer's disease and her efforts to care for him.
Why this book? Larkin discovered a love of writing in her 30s and 40s, as a public affairs writer. Later, as her husband's disease began to impact their lives more and more, she’d spend a late night every couple of weeks pouring out onto paper what she was experiencing as a full-time caregiver. Those stolen hours of solitude and the act of putting their experiences into words helped her to rise above the emotional whirlpool that surrounds dementia caregiving.
After her husband's death, Larkin's past writing helped her to reflect on the progression of her husband’s Alzheimer's disease and the impact it had on their lives. Enduring is a collection of the stories that best capture her caregiving experiences and the Alzheimer's disease manifestations that she witnessed.
